Investigation on iodine nutrition status of pregnant women in Shiyan City from 2017 to 2020

Abstract

Objective To understand the iodine nutritional status of pregnant women in Shiyan City,Hubei Province after the reform of the salt industry system. Methods From 2017 to 2020,2 900 pregnant women in Shiyan City,Hubei Province were selected to collect salt samples from their homes and randomly take one urine sample to detect salt and urine iodine levels. Results A total of 2 900 salt samples were collected from pregnant women's homes,with a median salt iodine content of 23.80 mg/kg.The coverage rate of iodized salt was 99.97% (2 899/2 900),the qualified rate of iodized salt was 96.38% (2 794/2 899),and the consumption rate of qualified iodized salt was 96.34% (2 794/2 900).A total of 2900 urine samples from pregnant women were tested,with a median urine iodine of 198.13 μg/L.Urine iodine <150 μg/L accounted for 27.00% (783/2 900). Conclusion From 2017 to 2020,the iodine salt coverage rate,qualified iodine salt rate,and consumption rate of qualified iodine salt among pregnant women of different age groups and pregnancy periods in Shiyan area have all met the national iodine deficiency disease elimination standards.The median urine iodine levels among pregnant women of different age groups and pregnancy periods are all suitable for iodine,but a considerable proportion of pregnant women are still in iodine deficiency status.
