Investigation of two confirmed cases of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome

Investigation of two confirmed cases of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome
Objective To conduct an epidemiological investigation on two confirmed cases of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) reported in Caidian District of Wuhan,to analyze the causes of transmission,and provide basis for the prevention and control of SFTS. Methods An epidemiological investigation was conducted on two confirmed cases of SFTS and individuals at risk reported in Caidian District from June 2024 to July 2024.Serum samples from the cases and their close contacts were collected for nucleic acid testing of Bandavirus dabieense. Results Both two confirmed cases of SFTS were farmers,with positive Bandavirus dabieense nucleic acid tests,history of outdoor exposure,and animal contact.The tick bite history of case 1 was unknown,while case 2 had a history of tick bites.The clinical manifestations and outcomes showed that both two cases had symptoms of fever and thrombocytopenia,case 1 died,and case 2 recovered.The close contact investigation revealed that case 1 had three close contacts,all negative for Bandavirus dabieense nucleic acid.Case 2 had one close contact,and positive for Bandavirus dabieense nucleic acid.Both case 2 and the close contact tested positive for Bandavirus dabieense nucleic acid within the same incubation period,and shared histories of outdoor exposure and animal contact. Conclusion SFTS-confirmed cases have a high likelihood of developing disease from tick bites,and a history of field (outdoor) activities is a risk factor for Bandavirus dabieense infection.
