Objective To understand the work of demonstration areas for comprehensive prevention and control of chronic diseases in Anhui province, provide a science basis for the construction of long-term mechanism. Methods The survey questionnaire "Development of demonstration areas for comprehensive prevention and control of chronic diseases during 2011-2014 in Anhui province" was used to collect information about safeguard, surveillance, health education and promotion, health lifestyle, discovery and intervention of population with high-risk, management of patients. Results More than 90% of the demonstration area at least convened a meeting of the leading group. The number of departments involved in multi-sectoral cooperation was up to 33, at least 6. Money investment decreased year by year. All of the demonstration areas had set up an independent chronic disease department. Up to 2014, the coverage ratio of death surveillance, tumor registry, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events reported were 100% (36/36), 91.7% (33/36) and 55.6% (20/36), respectively. The demonstration area which played or set up propaganda program regarding prevention and control of chronic diseases each year in the television, radio, on newspaper and website accounted for more than 36%, 52%, 76%, and 85%,respectively.Nearly 60% of the demonstration area increased zero healthy self monitoring point annually. About 50% of the demonstration areas carried out project of early diagnosis and treatment of cancer in 2014. The coverage rates of dental caries filling and pit and fissure sealant were 2/3 and 2/5 respectively. More than 90% of the demonstration areas had at least 10 self management teams completing activities annually. Conclusion The establishment of demonstration areas for comprehensive prevention and control of chronic diseases has promoted the work of provincial chronic disease control and prevention to some extent. Construction of demonstration areas should focus on fund investment, strengthening people's healthy lifestyle, and discovery and intervention of population with high-risk work, so as to continue the sustainable development of demonstration areas for comprehensive prevention and control of chronic diseases.
